David Tanner appointed as Advisor

Baseload Technology is pleased to announce that David Tanner has accepted an advisory role with the company. David is a professional engineer and has been a leader in the energy industry, pioneering the design and construction of many fuel fired and heat recovery plant designs in both the utility and large industrial power plant area in Australia and Southeast Asia.
David worked for Babcock Energy (UK and Australia) in the 1980’s including work on the steam generator systems for the AGR’s (Advance Gas Cooled Reactors) in the UK. On returning to Australia, David has held senior project and engineering management roles in steam power plant engineering companies ABB, ALSTOM, and AE&E, and is an active member of both Engineers Australia and the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).
David currently works on a range of new and traditional thermal energy applications. David was awarded the EA Sydney “Engineer of the Year" award in 2004, and is a Senior Associate at Boiler & Power Plant Services, an Energy and Plant Consulting Business.

Baseload Technology signs letter of intent with Hyperion Power Generation

Sydney, 4 August 2010 -- Baseload Technology, an Australian based energy company serving the power generation market, has signed a letter of intent with Hyperion Power Generation to negotiate the acquisition of a Mini Power Reactor (MPR).
Hyperion Power Module
The reactor, called a Hyperion Power Module (HPM), is designed to be used as the energy source for small base load power stations. Euphemistically referred to as a “fission battery” the HPM is transportable on the back of a truck and each HPM reactor supplies enough energy to power more than 25000+ large homes, or the equivalent, for 10 years. It is not refueled on site. After the non-weapons grade fuel has run its course, the sealed 1.5 metre wide by 2.5 metres tall canister is replaced with another and the original is returned to the factory. No spent or 'waste' fuel is stored at the site. Features and operating procedures including these and others have made the HPM attractive globally as a non-proliferation nuclear energy solution.

Baseload Technology is designing various power plant configurations for turnkey distributed base load electricity networks powered by HPM reactors. "The HPM offers a scalable energy solution for developing communities due to the manageable costs and construction times of each individual plant," said Wayne Addison, Director of Baseload Technology.

“We're excited about Baseload Technology developing products and services that support the HPM." said John 'Grizz' Deal, CEO of Hyperion Power Generation. "At Hyperion Power, we believe safe affordable power is the key that turns the lock on solving many of the world's problems - from providing basic human needs such as plentiful clean water in villages, to running entire cities without harmful emissions. Wind, solar and other developments are wonderful. However, at this point, the planet's best option for providing enough robust base load power is nuclear, and the HPM makes the option of safe, secure, cost-efficient nuclear power available to just about everyone.

The International Energy Outlook 2010, a report by the US Energy Information Administration, states that nuclear generation is attracting new interest as countries seek to increase the diversity of their energy supplies, improve energy security, and provide a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels. The report projects the strongest growth in nuclear power will be non-OECD Asian countries, where nuclear power generation is projected to grow at an average rate of 7.7 percent per year until 2035.

“Small nuclear technology provides a means for developing Asian countries to build their nuclear power industry for a fraction of the cost and risk usually associated with large conventional nuclear power plants,” said Addison. “I am confident that small nuclear technology will provide the base load energy solution for many developing nations that would otherwise be constrained to fossil fuel solutions.”
